Number stories are often written and taught as an extension of computational practice. When students are told to find the numbers and “key words”, they are being deprived of real understanding and problem solving.  As we shift our focus from “number” to “story”, we are able to give students the ability and confidence to more widely generalize what they have learned from solving one kind of problem to solving a variety of other problems.
