Rothstein - Better Questions, Better Decisions: Building Consensus with the Right Question Strategy

Decision making and reaching consensus can be a challenging endeavor. Yet, being able to
actively and strategically participate in the decision making process is essential, especially for
district, school, and departmental leaders who are tackling difficult issues such as budgetary
changes or review processes, trying to build buy-in for new initiatives, or creating a collaborative
and inclusive problem-solving culture. The Right Question Strategy offers a simple yet powerful
strategy that helps individuals more effectively participate in decisions by learning to 1) define
and identify decisions; 2) explore three key elements in decision making—reasons, processes,
and roles; 3) ask questions about decisions. This easy-to- use and easy-to teach-strategy can be
used to build consensus within a group through creating a space where everyone is able to
efficiently and effectively ask questions about decisions.

How can ordinary citizens hold accountable decision-makers? If we more people learn how to ask their own questions, and better questions, how could they improve our democracy? How would it improve education?
